To apply, you must:

• Fill out the application form and obtain a sponsor's signature.
• Prepare a typewritten summary of your achievements in astronomy, enclosing optional exhibits.
• Mail the application form, summary and exhibits to the Award Chair by the award deadline (postmark date).

Provide a typewritten summary, not to exceed 5 pages (sides) single-spaced, listing your accomplishments in any one or more of the following areas: p align="justify

• local club activities;
• regional and national organizational activities;
• academic scholarship in astronomy or science;
• observing;
• astrophotography/CCD imaging;
• public education;
• telescope or equipment design or construction;
• publications and writing;
• research.

To assist you in considering topics for your summary, we have provided an "Activity List" at the end of this brochure. Remember, no one demonstrates achievement in all of these areas. This award is designed to recognize achievement in one or more of these areas.

Exhibits.

At your option, you may enclose any of the following items with your application summary:

• articles, research papers, abstracts;
• astrophoto prints or slides, photos of CCD images;
• sample observing sketches;
• newspaper articles about your activities;
• award certificates and commendations;
• other documents or exhibits which you would like the judges to consider.

Copies:

We need four (4) sets of everything you send...so we can distribute them to our judges.

Length:

Your Application Summary must not exceed 5 sides single-spaced and typed. Your Exhibits (each set) should be limited to 20 sides excluding articles and research papers which you have written. Articles and research papers, if any, may be of any length. Application packages will not be returned absent special arrangement with the Award Chair.

Activity List:

1. Local Club Activities:

• Offices held; committees;
• Club awards, recognition;
• Project involvement;
• Dates of membership;
• Club publications edited;
• Involvement with adult organizations, outside organizations, schools, etc.;
• Work in building or maintaining an observatory or other club facility.

2. Academics:

• Academic record in science, math;
• Astronomy and science courses completed;
• School and science fair awards and honors;
• School-related astronomy research projects;
• Summer astronomy or space programs attended.

3. Regional and National Organizations:

If you are involved with organizations other than local clubs, such as the Astronomical League, AAVSO, ALPO, IDA, IAPPP, IOTA, the Planetary Society, the Webb Society, the Young Astronauts Program, the American Space Society, NDSOS or others, please describe:

4. Observing:

• Telescopes and equipment which the candidate normally uses;
• Description of your observing log - including dates covered by log, number of observations recorded, number of objects logged, described and/or sketched in the log;
• Messier, NGC and other deep sky objects logged, described, sketched and/or photographed;
• Variable star observations, meteor counts, occultation timings, comet searches, supernova searches, sunspot counts and other regular observing programs in which you have participated;
• Observing awards and honors received;
• Observing programs or projects organized.

5. Astrophotography/CCD Imaging:

• Equipment used;
• Publications (title, date, object) in which your astrophotos or CCD images have appeared;
• Astrophotography/CCD awards and honors received.

6. Public Education:

• Public and club programs given (list topic, date, audience, location in separate exhibit); courses taught;
• Talks and exhibitions given at conventions and telescope fairs;
• Public observations given;
• Total hours of public involvement.

7. Telescope Design:

• Telescopes and astronomy-related equipment designed, built or modified (describe your role in developing the equipment and the nature and purpose of the design or modification);
• Telescope making awards and honors.

8. Publications:

• Articles, papers, treatises, brochures, abstracts and other articles which you have written, edited or prepared;
• Publicity which you have received.

9. Research:

Astronomical research in which you have participated (include purpose, premise, method, equipment used, results and awards and honors received).

Your sponsor must be 21 years of age and be either a teacher, counsellor or principal in your high school or the highest officer in your community's nearest local astronomy club. If you have difficulty locating a sponsor, please contact the Award Chair. Young people are increasingly denied access to astronomy by the lack of astronomy education in high school curricula and by light pollution in and near our cities. For this reason, the League is especially interested in promoting the study of astronomy among young men and women.
