As many of you know, Astronomy Day (as defined by the
Astronomical
League) is Saturday May 10th. Many amateur astronomy
associations and
planetariums stage special public events for Astronomy
Day, and if
you're one of them, we're preparing a special free "Hubble
Kit" for you.
We haven't completely settled on the contents, but
it will likely contain much of the following:
- Several new Hubble lithographs (200-300 each for
public distribution)
Bookmarks
- A new Electromagnetic Spectrum poster (a quantity
for giving out to
teachers)
- A Hubble video DVD (if we can get it done in time)
containing several 8-12 minute mini-documentaries
- .An interactive HST CD produced by Lockheed
- A booklet on how to build a simple Hubble model
(200-300 for public
distribution)
- A list of Hubble Space Telescope users in your area,
in case you want
to invite one to give a talk.
In addition, for those of you who have local press
contacts, we may be
releasing a new Hubble image on Astronomy Day. If you'd
like to participate, we may be able to provide a large
photographic print of the new image, for you to unveil
the moment it comes out of press embargo (You supply
the black cloth!)
Quantities for all of these materials will be limited;
our apologies in advance if we can't service every request.
Also, please note that this offer is for USA-based organizations.
The
catch?
We request two things:
- Please ask for these materials only if you're planning
an Astronomy Day event.
- Please fill out and return the survey form we'll
include in the package. We would also love to have
some pictures of the event at yourfacility.
So, if you're planning an Astronomy Day event and would
like a "Hubble Kit" please send an email to
our Exhibits Coordinator, Lucy Albert at lalbert@stsci.edu.
Lucy is handling all of the logistics for this.
If you have press contacts who would likely cover an
unveiling of a new Hubble image at your planetarium,
please make a note of that in your email.
