The Astronomical Calendar 2000 by Guy
Ottewell of Furman University is now available. This
famous atlas-sized annual book is the most widely used
and most attractive guide to what will happen in the
sky throughout the year.
If you are seeking a comprehensive
source of astronomical data for the new year, you won’t
go wrong with this publication. This atlas sized annual
book is a popular addition to any amateur's library
and has been used enthusiastically since 1974. Each
oversized page is equivalent to about three pages of
an ordinary book. The large pages allow for large spreads
of diagrams and text. This book is useful to both beginners
and seasoned amateurs alike, and there are many levels
of information. For each month, there is a large map
of the evening sky. Facing it is a diary of 40 or so
events happening that month.
Other features on the monthly pages
are diagrams of where the planets are located in relation
to each other and the Sun, as well as sketches of sky
scenes. Supplementary sections give highlights of the
year on such subjects as: The Sun, Moon, Eclipses, Occultations,
Conjunctions, individual Planets, Asteroids and Comets,
Meteors, Chronological Charts on Space Flight, Profiles
of Deep Sky Objects, and various other graphs and charts.
A most useful resource. Some color illustrations. Retail
$22.00. Order through the Astronomical League Book Service
for $19.80 and pay no tax or shipping.
A companion volume, aptly named The
Astronomical Companion,is a general guide to astronomy.
It is in same large page format as the calendar. It’s
one of those “just about everything you would ever want
to know” books, done just as well as the calendar. One
of these should also be in your library. 11 x 15 in.
73 pages. $18.00 retail, $16.20 through the Book Service.
