Paul Castle's compilation, Collected
Works on Double Stars, is a detailed listing of 596
double and multiple stars visible from mid-northern
latitudes. The stars are arranged by constellation,
and then by page number in the Uranometria Star Atlas,
to help you in precise location of each group.
Paul has been working on this list
for over nine years, and it is now in its third edition.
His interest in double stars began when it became apparent
that deep sky work in a light polluted urban environment
is less than a satisfying experience. After spending
time on the planets and the moon, he wanted to expand
his backyard observing opportunities. Observing double
stars, being dependent on atmospheric conditions rather
than dark skies, became a natural activity for an in-town
observer who does not have a dark sky site in his backyard.
A detailed reference work is a distinct
advantage when you are pursuing one of the AL's observing
projects. A good star chart, of course, is essential,
but we all like to know more about the objects we observe
than just their position in the sky. If you are interested
in double stars, and are working on the Double Star
Certificate, or just thinking of doing so, this booklet
will be of great value to you. And when you have finished
the 100 on that list, and gotten your certificate, you
still have 496 others in Paul's list to observe!
Paul Castle is a member of the Popular
Astronomy Club in Rock Island, IL, and has been AL Book
Service coordinator for years.
