One Small Square: The Night Sky

One Small Square: The Night Sky
is aimed at young children in astronomy through a detailed
look at one small area of the night sky in the area
of Orion. This book is one of a series of "One Small
Square" books for young people, one that is richly
illustrated and catches the eye.
Concepts such as constellations, stellar
distances, stellar evolution, binaries, stellar birth
and death, galaxies, and planetary system formation
are clearly explained in simple terms. Since the ecliptic
passes through Orion, the Moon and planets are also
discussed, and the book makes suggestions on how to
observe them.
I found the "One Small Square"
idea an effective and intriguing concept. The Orion
area was a good choice on which to center the child
s attention. But a seasonal set of all-sky maps is included
in the back of the book.
