Celebrate Astronomy Day with a NASA Night Sky Network Astronomy Club, Nationwide

The NASA Night Sky Network astronomy clubs invite you to celebrate Astronomy Day! There are plenty of star parties, solar viewings and other public events. You don't need any experience with a telescope or to know anything about astronomy, just come and enjoy. Ask about becoming a club member, too and be part of the stargazing craze. Bring friends, family, and your neighbors for a stellar time that's easy on your wallet. Most events are free or low-cost!

The NASA Night Sky Network is a community of almost 400 astronomy clubs, managed by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
ALABAMA
Astronomy Day, The WA Gayle Planetarium, 1010 Forest Avenue, Montgomery
The WA Gayle Planetarium, in conjunction with the Auburn Astronomical Society and the NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassadors program, will hold their annual Astronomy Day festivities. Come on out before sunset to take a look at our Sun through solar telescopes, which is certain to provide some sunspots and prominences as we approach solar maximum next year. Before darkness sets in, take a stroll around Oak Park and explore a scale model of our solar system. Near twilight, there will be a talk in the planetarium concerning the size and scale of our universe. Once darkness sets in, join the telescopes outside for viewing multitudes of celestial objects.
Hope to see you there.

3:30 pm VENUS: EARTH’S EVIL TWIN AND ASTRONOMY’S YARDSTICK
with Guest Speaker, Mark Wallace of NASA/JPL
Venus has been called our sister planet. It is our closest planetary neighbor and nearly the same size as the Earth. But it is a very different world. It is also very important in the history of astronomy. Mark will talk about some of that history, including the amazing story of the 1761 and 1769 transits and what we know of Venus today.
Mark Wallace is a Mission Design Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. In his 12 years with the Lab, he has helped develop concepts for robotic and human missions for Venus, the Earth, Moon, Mars, asteroids, comets, and beyond. He was recently the lead Mission Designer for a Venus lander concept and is currently a member of the operations team for the two GRAIL lunar orbiters, Ebb and Flow.
