Astronomical League Resources for International Year of Astronomy 2009

400 Years of the Telescope

"Live" Stream of Deep Sky Objects from Southern Galactic Telescope Hosting Site in Australia

An International Year of Astronomy 'Live" Stream of Deep Sky Objects is available from the Southern Galactic Telescope Hosting Site 1 Facility in Australia. This service is a combined project in partnership with Universe Today, Warren Rupp Observatory and the Northerngalactic and Southerngalactic astronomy service websites. The 'live' broadcasts target night sky objects of interest as seen from the Southern Hemisphere whenever clear weather conditions are available. The transmissions will be scheduled to commence around 0900 UT and will run as long as possible during the evening (Local TIme).

To view check the Northern Galactic Television page via the Galactic TV link to see if they are transmitting.

In the Footsteps of Galileo

Four hundred years ago, Galileo Galilei was the first person in history who turned a telescope to the heavens. What he saw forever changed our concept of the universe. Before that event, all astronomical knowledge was gained through naked-eye observations. After that, our understanding of the universe grew dramatically, and telescopes became larger and more powerful, eventually giving us the spectacular views that we see today.
