PLEASE JOIN NASA IN EXPLORING "ANCIENT
OBSERVATORIES"
NASA in cooperation with a number of national and international
space science and science education groups is
again sponsoring SUN EARTH DAY. This year's theme is
"Ancient Observatories, Timeless Knowledge".
For thousands of years, civilizations have wondered
about and studied the patterns of movement of the stars,
planets, sun and moon. Over 1,000 years ago, the Mayan's
knew about Venus' synodic orbital period of 584 days.
The megalithic passage tomb at Newgrange, Ireland was
built around 3200 BC. Passage into the tomb is illuminated
by the rising sun only on the winter solstice. There
are many other examples of ancient knowledge about the
movement of the heavens.
Please join us in celebrating these amazing human efforts
to understand our place in the universe. Our Ancient
Observatories web site is at http://sunearthday.nasa.gov.
Here you can register to receive a kit of
NASA education materials; zoom around Chaco Canyon's
Pueblo Bonita;
peruse the Ancient Observatory Interactive Time Line;
or try your hand at the certificate program for Amateur
Astronomers.
