The Astronomical League Trust Fund

To ensure long-term financial stability, the League established a Trust Fund in November 1970. Starting with $1,000 from the proceeds of that year's convention and private donations, the Fund's principal now exceeds $60,000. The interest earned annually has been supporting the League's many special projects.

The Astronomical League has been growing by leaps and bounds. We have over 18,000 members from all across the United States and the world. These members are from over 250 member astronomical societies and from our members-at-large program. They have discovered the benefits of membership in the Astronomical League which include observing awards, conventions, national awards, and most importantly, out national newsletter the Reflector. All these programs make the League an attractive benefit for the local astronomical society to offer to their members.

The Astronomical League Trust Fund is the League's primary source of funding for special projects. These are proposed by League members to the Executive Committee. If the project is deemed worthy in helping the League to meet its goals, the Executive Committee recommends it to the Trustees who then vote on whether to fund the project. We are always looking for new ways to help build the League, and if you have any ideas, please feel free to contact the Astronomical League president, Charles Allen, with your suggestion.

The Trust Fund's latest project is the International Space Station-Amateur Telescope (ISS-AT). The Trust Fund is providing seed money to get this project "off the ground" by funding the start-up expenses. ISS-AT Chair Orville Brettman remarked: "The gratitude of the ISS-AT committee, and surely all of it's potential users is extended to ... the Trust Fund Trustees. By your collective foresight has amateur astronomy been granted a franchise above the travail of our atmosphere."
