Grant Clayton

Grant is a member of the Salt Lake Astronomical Society and the Clark Planetarium (Salt Lake City, Utah). He was appointed an Adjunct Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah in 2003. Grant became a member of the Utah State Bar® in 1985 and a Registered Patent Attorney in 1986.

Grant is one of the founding shareholders of the law firm of Clayton, Howarth & Cannon,® P.C., located in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, where he has practiced since 1999. Prior to the formation of Clayton, Howarth & Cannon,® he practiced intellectual property law as a partner with the firm of Thorpe, North & Western® (1990-1999) in Sandy, Utah and as an associate with the firm of Workman, Nydegger & Jensen (now Workman Nydegger®) (1985-1990) in Salt Lake City, Utah.

His practice is limited to all aspects of intellectual property law and emphasizes protection of inventions, including via national and international patent prosecution, copyright protection, and protection of brand identities, including registration of trademarks and service marks in the United States and other jurisdictions as well as enforcement of all intellectual property rights. Grant’s clients include independent inventors as well as Fortune® 100 multinational companies, with Grant’s clients being located both within and without the United States. Grant served as chair of the Patent, Trademark & Copyright Section (now the Intellectual Property Law Section) of the Utah State Bar® 1991-92 and served as Chair of Lawyer Benefits Committee of the Utah State Bar® from 1998-2006 and served as Co-Chair Member Resources Committee of the Utah State Bar® from 2006-2009.

Grant received an undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University® in 1980 and his law degree from the University of UtahK in 1985 where he served as a member of the Utah Law Review and upon graduation was elected a member of the Order of the Coif.
