She is based at the historic Yerkes Observatory, Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Vivian initiated an observing program wherein teachers use telescopes at Yerkes Observatory.

She also runs HOU (Hands-On Universe) teacher workshops in the Chicago area and elsewhere in the Midwest, as well as in Sweden, Russia, Hawaii, and Australia.
