Nat’l Astronomy Day & 25th anniversary StarParty at Little Red School House Nature Center!
Hosted by Chicago Astronomical Society ~ established 1862
Special guest Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle

Friends,

You’re invited this National Astronomy Day to a special StarParty at the Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center celebrating the 25YEAR ANNIVERSARY of stargazing sessions at Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center by a core group of volunteers of the Chicago Astronomical Society.

Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle will come to personally thank the volunteers for helping others get connected to their Universe and encouraging stewardship of the starry night sky.

Please come, rain or shine, and add to the celebration. Cake & refreshments will be served (limited quantities). Weather permitting, telescopes will be set up for your enjoyment after the indoor presentation. Feel welcomed to bring your own scope or binoculars if you like. There’s plenty of room for everyone. Enjoy the camaraderie of others who enjoy the starry skies.

This event officially starts at 7:30PM and ends at 10:30 PM. You are welcomed to come early (at 7:00PM) for an informal discussion about latest updates of light pollution reduction and starlight restoration efforts in the Chicago area.

Many of you will be happy to hear that President Toni Preckwinkle whole-heartedly supported the initiative led by Commissioner Larry Suffredin in 2012 that led to the unanimous vote approving the Cook County Lighting Ordinance. Nicknamed the “Starlight Ordinance”, it is the first-ever ordinance in Cook County to officially recognize the value of starlight and the worth-while effort to reduce light pollution. Please come and thank her for this important first step.

Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center (certified LEED) is a registered Star Park in the Global StarPark Network by UNESCO MaB- supported One Star at a Time.

The area here is beautiful by day, too. It is a great family outing at the surrounding hiking trails and pond. Hike the same area that American Indians and pioneers did in the 1800s. Inside the LRSH there are little animals and activities. If you have the time, consider coming in the afternoon — then breaking for dinner, and come back again for the stars.
